Adrenal Tumor Surgery Success

The Royal Medical Services – King Hamad University Hospital successfully performed surgery on a patient in his forties who was suffering from an active tumor in the left adrenal gland, measuring 15 cm in diameter and 13 cm in width.

The patient had been experiencing rapid heartbeats, unstable blood pressure, constant sweating, and difficulty eating normally, which led to continuous weight loss.

After conducting the necessary imaging and detailed lab tests, it was determined that the patient had an overactive secretory adrenal tumor (pheochromocytoma), which had spread to the spinal column and other parts of the skeletal system, along with a defective fracture in the seventh cervical vertebra.

Accordingly, the medical team, consisting of uro-oncologists, a hepatobiliary surgeon, endocrinologists, and an anesthesia and medical oncology team from the Royal Medical Services – King Hamad University Hospital, developed a phased treatment plan for the patient.

The first phase involved stabilizing his blood pressure and treating his rapid heartbeats with the necessary medications.

Subsequently, the surgical team performed a three-hour surgery to remove the active tumor, with great assistance from the anesthesia team. The surgery was successful, without any notable complications.

The third phase involved treating the defective fracture in the cervical vertebra with radiation therapy, followed by treating the tumor spread in the bones with specific medications.

It is worth noting that the patient was discharged from the hospital in good and stable condition. Follow-up visits in outpatient clinics confirmed significant improvement. The patient will continue with the treatment plan and rehabilitation therapy developed by the specialized team from the Royal Medical Services.
