Dr. Rana Abdulrahman AlGhatam

Dr. Rana Al Ghatam is a Consultant Orthodontist at the Military Hospital, Royal Medical Services. She graduated from the University of London (Guy ’s, King ’s, and St. Thomas ’Hospitals) with a Bachelor ’s Degree in Dentistry. She completed her Specialty Training in Orthodontics from Bristol and Bath and was awarded a Doctorate Degree in Orthodontics from the University of Bristol. Her Doctoral Thesis focused on Dentofacial Outcomes in the Cleft Care UK Study (CCUK), and she was a member of the Cleft Care UK Team from 2012 to 2014. Dr. Rana also holds Membership of the Faculty of Dentistry (MFDS) from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and both Fellowship in Dental Surgery (FDS) and Membership of Orthodontics (MOrth) from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh, where she was the runner-up for the MOrth Gold Medal prize. With 17 years of experience at the Military Hospital, Dr. Rana is highly specialized in Orthodontics with a particular interest in Cleft Lip and Palate care.

Innovative Procedures and Advanced Technology

Dr. Rana established Bahrain ’s first Centralized Cleft Care Multidisciplinary Team to deliver coordinated, lifelong care for individuals with cleft lip and/or palate.

This team-based approach supports patients from prenatal diagnosis through adulthood, involving experts in orthodontics, maxillofacial and plastic surgery, pediatric dentistry, speech therapy, ENT, pediatrics, audiology, psychology, nursing, anesthesiology, and genetics. Her efforts have led to the creation of a Cleft Database Registry, the implementati on of standardized care pathways, and the introduction of national core cleft care guidelines. Dr. Rana has also led research initiatives and international collaborations while developing educational tools to support both patients and their families, significantly raising the standard of cleft care in Bahrain.
