Medical Oncology
Medical Oncology is a discipline that is concerned with every stage of cancer; from cancer screening, prevention, early diagnosis, to care and treatment of cancer patients. Our team of expert medical oncologists, in collaboration with other departments, help ensure and orchestrate a multidisciplinary approach during the diagnosis and treatments of each patient at BOC. Oncology treatments have four main purposes: Curative, adjuvant, neo-adjuvant and palliative:
Curative treatment aims to completely eradicate cancer.
Adjuvant treatment helps to reduce the risk for recurrence and increase the cure rate.
Neo-adjuvant treatments sometimes referred to as induction therapy, helps make the cancerous mass suitable for surgical management, and protect the organ.
Palliative treatment for our cancer patients aims to prolong quality of life in the advanced stages.
Before the initiation of any treatment, the best care plan in finalized through a detailed and professional discussion at the National Tumor Board. Here, clinicians from various disciplines of medicine and surgery meet to discuss the case and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan for each patient. In addition to the treatment course, the BOC medical oncology team ensures that each oncology patient is offered a full range of services (including nutrition and psychology).
Furthermore, our patients are also supported by expertise in King Hamad University Hospital, especially during cases of emergency or when requested by the BOC team to ensure that each patient receives the best care possible. The Bahrain Oncology Center remains committed towards uninterrupted patient care without compromise.
Our services were maintained throughout the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic when the Oncology services accommodated newly referred patients from sister national institutions and from abroad.
The commitment and dedication of the staff was demonstrated when the in-patient Medical Oncology wards and the out-patient clinics including day care unit succeeded in absorbing the overwhelming numbers of referred patients and maintained a world-class quality of care, patients’ satisfaction and wellbeing.

Hematology & Bone Marrow Transplantation
The Hematology Department provides services for the diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders and simultaneously runs the bone marrow transplantation services.
Cell Therapy Unit (Apheresis Unit)
The Apheresis Unit at the Bahrain Oncology Center opened in 2020. It offers various treatments, with plasma exchange transfusions making up 61% of the procedures and collecting a patient’s own stem cells for future use accounting for 32%.
